Abstract

Dinar and dirham have an important role in the history of Islamic economics. This paper aims to find out the important role of the dinar and dirham as Islamic currencies used throughout the history of this economic system. The method of obtaining information is by studying literature and googling from articles in journals, as well as information scattered on the internet. The results of tracing sources found that the dinar was made of gold, and the dirham of silver, was widely used in economic transactions from the time of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, continuing until the heyday of the Islamic caliphate was established. These two currencies not only serve as a medium of exchange, but also as a symbol of economic stability and monetary power in Muslim society. After the collapse of Ottoman Turkey, the dinar and dirham were practically no longer used even though they were still conceptually in Islamic treasures. The spirit of re-applying the dirham dinar in the Islamic economic system is getting stronger along with the failure of capitalism in development.
