Abstrak

This article explores the history of Islamic economics with a focus on the concept of zakat as a vital financial instrument. Exploration is carried out by reviewing the literature from primary and secondary sources, such as literature books, articles that have been published in journals and so on. The finding from the tracing on the source is that zakat as one of the five pillars of Islam is an obligation for Muslims. Its history can be traced back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH who emphasized the importance of zakat as a tool for wealth redistribution to reduce social inequality and poverty, in the classical Islamic period zakat was managed by the state and became one of the main sources of income for various public services, especially for the eight ashnaf who were entitled to receive it, but after the collapse of the Islamic government and the emergence of colonialism the management of zakat underwent significant changes, moving from state control to individuals and communities.
